Quote Of The Day

“I guess it’s something I’d like to see. But I’ve got to tell you, there’s something about it—it just gets so much more intense every time somebody loses it.”
Veteran race caller Tom Durkin in USA Today on Big Brown’s chances of winning the Belmont Stakes (G1) and securing the first Triple Crown in 30 years. Durkin has called several near Triple Crown misses in the Belmont from Silver Charm in 1997 to Smarty Jones in 2004

I wonder if it would really change things, like bringing in new fans of racing?

Is he saying he likes the intensity of the loss?

It may bring in new fans, but then Big Brown will retire and leave the new fans without a horse to root for. I would like to see a Triple Crown winner as much as anyone, but it seems like a gyp for it to be a horse without real competition who is retiring anyway.

Kara: I think he is saying that the buildup is more exciting than anything else. If Big Brown wins the Belmont it will be slightly anti-climatic.
