Another Full Brother To Barbaro Is Born

La Ville Rouge delivered a full brother to Barbaro on Tuesday at Mill Ridge Farm in Lexington. The Dynaformer colt weighs 142 pounds. “He is a good-size colt with plenty of leg and size as indicative of his weight,” said Headley Bell, the farm’s managing partner. “A bay colt, he only has a marking on the center of his forehead. Both mom and baby are well.”

La Ville Rouge has produced six foals for Roy and Gretchen Jackson, all of them males. Four of them are by Dynaformer, including Barbaro, the 2006 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1)winner.

Nicanor, full brother to Barbaro, will be making his first start in race 8 at Gulfstream Park.

Let's hope that this will be the first race of a long and illustrious career.

“He’s got some big shoes to fill. It’s a hard thing to do, being the younger brother of Barbaro. It will always be, ‘There’s Barbaro’s brother.’ and not ‘There’s Nicanor.’ But he’s a good enough horse. They’ll remember his name.”

Nicanor, a full brother to ill-fated 2006 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) winner Barbaro, is steadily progressing toward his career debut.

On December 28 at Palm Meadows Training Center, Roy and Gretchen Jackson’s homebred three-year-old Dynaformer colt drilled three furlongs from the starting gate in :36.50 handily for trainer Michael Matz. The workout ranked second of 15 timed moves at the distance.

“He hadn’t broken from the gate in a while,” Matz said. “He is quite good at the gate and he’s doing fine. If everything continues to go well he should be starting at the end of the month.”

Nicanor has been breezing steadily since November. Out of multiple graded stakes-placed winner La Ville Rouge, by Carson City, the bay colt has developed a strong following before even making his first start. Many of the same devoted fans who followed every update on Barbaro’s battle for survival after he broke down in the 2006 Preakness Stakes (G1) have actively followed the progress of Nicanor and his two-year-old full brother, Lentenor...

*on a side note, I got to "meet" Nicanor at John Stephens farm in Ocala where Nicanor underwent his early training. 

Barbaro

Roy and Gretchen Jackson have finally decided what to do with Barbaro's ashes. They are going to be interred at Churchill Downs and marked with a statue. Barbaro will be the first horse to be buried at the historic racetrack.

Full brother to Barbaro born

A full brother to the late 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was born April 19 at John and Alice Chandler's Mill Ridge Farm in Lexington.
Barbaro's dam, La Ville Rouge, produced the bay Dynaformer colt at 2:08 a.m. Thursday. Both mare and foal are doing well, according to a release issued Friday morning by the farm.
Barbaro was euthanized Jan. 29 due to complications from his May 20, 2006, breakdown in the Preakness Stakes.

HBO Sports is producing a documentary on Barbaro, the 2006 Kentucky Derby winner. Many people became familiar with this horse after he suffered a catastophic right hind leg fracture in the Preakness, and followed his eight month battle to survive. He unfortunately succumbed to laminitis in both hind feet and was euthanized on January 29th, 2007.

This film will explore Barbaro's amazing will to live, the treatment he received at The University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Clinic, and the grace and compassion of his owners, Roy and Gretchen Jackson, and his trainer, Michael Matz. The documentary will debut on June 6th at 10PM on HBO, three days before The Belmont Stakes.
