What the heck is the blue light on top of traffic signals?
They seem to be lit up only when the light is red, and go out when the light changes to green. Are they red light camera's? Do they have something to do with emergency vehicles? Does anyone know?
Somehow I doubt they are for snow emergency here in Florida, perhaps hurricane? I did some research and I think its an ultra-violet sensor for emergency vehicles to be able to remotely change the light, but I'm not sure. The mystery lives on...
I'm only aware of the flashing unit on top for emergency vehicles. It flashes when they are in the area and then stops. Sounds similar but not the same.

When I lived in Salem, MA, they used the blue light to signal a snow emergency.
Which seemed to be all the time.
